Strawberry picking is a popular event in the winter/spring season in and around China. On a sunny relaxed afternoon, it’s a nice family event for the children and adults alike.

It’s a great opportunity for them to learn about how the strawberries are grown, then seeing then transformed into a smoothie or an addition to a cake!

Its humid and hot in the plastic-coated green-house tunnels. If you can ignore the frequent encounters with the bees (who generally aren’t interested in your presence) or the heat, you have the pick of the bunch to collect your own kilograms of fresh juicy strawberries to add to your daily vitamin C requirement.

Events of the Strawberry picking Day

You’ll find many locations to pick strawberries all the country in many cities. Many areas offer tours but if you can easily drive to a location and get stuck in. We went this time with Yo-yo and her family on a 40 minute drive to a suburban area of Shanghai. It wasn’t too overrun with people. It was nice to see the groups of elderly local ladies who seemed in their element removing the weeds and tending to the vines. They smiled and chatted away in their local dialect, some that was even incomprehensible to our Chinese friends. However, the sentiments were all positive!

It was a pleasant day out- another one to remember.
