The journey

There’s so many things to highlight in their journey of living in China. We went through some old videos and photos and enjoyed looking at the happiness in Olivia’s eyes knowing she was really into what she was reading!

The journey to learning how to speak another language (especially when both parents are not native to that language) is long and at times, arduous. However in general it gives lots of enjoyment and sense of achievement all round.

Learning to speak Chinese, and now learning to read and write Chinese are now the next steps into consolidating their soon to be life-long skill.

The motivation

The single most important point for us when embarking on the language acquisition of Chinese for the children- is to endeavour as much as possible to stimulate their interest. In my opinion, it is the vital ingredient in the entire process. Inadvertently, the child enjoys the journey even at the times when it becomes the most challenging. The foundations are therefore set, and the rest is like poetry in motion (well, mostly!)

What I often find helpful is to look online or read a new book that will inspire myself or the kids to keep going. Everyone’s story is highly unique! Its intriguing to know what are the catalysts that start the interest in the road of learning languages – one or both parents? Grandparents? Parents travel for work or family/friendship ties.
